The Saga of a Root Canal

The decay in a tooth that may start off as a minor problem may become a big problem if not treated early!!

I have learned a little bit about the progression of decay and how far it can go!  If someone chooses to pig out on the good stuff like junk food and then fools around about housekeeping, life becomes one big party.  Just as a lawn needs to be mowed and raked OR the kitchen floor needs to be swept and mopped; a person needs to do the cleaning chores to keep a fresh and sparkling smile.  Without proper brushing and flossing, you can end up with no smile at all!!

The first sign of poor housekeeping is yucky looking teeth and bad breath.  All the while, plaque is building up on and in between the teeth and settling down on the gums.  Then bacteria join the party, just to make things interesting.  After that, tooth rot [decay] sticks it’s nose in.  If not treated, decay just keeps on moving in to set up house!  Once the gums get upset about the uninvited houseguests, they start getting sore and swelling up with indignation.  And then, the decay’s best friend “infection” joins the crowd.

While all of this is going on, Decay is moving through the enamel and into the dentin [center] of the tooth.  Guess what comes next?   The pulp, otherwise known as The Root!

Now we have to go to the Tooth Police [Dentist]…  This is where all of the uninvited guests are escorted out!  As with any party when it gets broken up by the police [tooth] someone is going to get hurt!  In this case, it is the owner of the teeth that didn’t do the necessary housecleaning chores.

To continue with our story, if there is decay and infection being ushered out, there is going to have to be a replacement for that empty feeling that’s left.  Once the tooth and root have been emptied of the nasty stuff, the gaping hole has to be sterilized.  After this, a dump truck full of various dental material backs up and fills the canal where the root was and the tooth that had to be drilled open [gaping hole] up!

Now, you may think that this is the end of our story!  But,” Oh  No’ the tooth is now weak and  sore!  If the tooth itself is too weak, it’s a whole new ball game.  The Royalty is brought in, in the form of a Crown!  Royalty is even more expensive.  So is removing the tooth if the Royalty doesn’t do the job.  But that’s another story!!

Just to think that all of this along with the root canal could have been avoided if the owner had just done their daily chores!!!!   I’ll leave the moral of this story for you to figure out. Happy Smiles to You
